ABOUT
I’d always wanted to be a craftsman and I’ve felt that I’ve had it in me to produce these beautiful things, and even after 45 or so years I’m still amazed by the intrigue of jewellery and what it means to some people. I became a jeweller because of the craft. I don’t think I was a natural at it and it wasn’t always easy, but I loved the process of learning the craft. I’ve always been an ideas man so coming up with the idea was easy, I just had to learn how do it!
Making fine jewellery or bespoke jewellery does give you the luxury of doing what you’re good at because it has so many layers, one of which is great craftsmanship!
MY STORY
Background & Craftsmanship
Bruce Jackson is a goldsmith dedicated to designing and creating jewellery for those who appreciate originality, exclusivity, and high-quality craftsmanship, all infused with a uniquely Kiwi sensibility. His style is defined by simplicity, elegant form, texture, and often a subtle twist.
Growing up in semi-rural Papatoetoe, Bruce set off on his OE in the late 1970s, embarking on the classic European adventure before settling in London. It was there, almost by chance, that he entered the world of jewellery. He began learning under two master jewellers, Roy Corengia and David Bolam, who had established a firm providing services to leading West End jewellers, including the renowned diamond house Graff. Their company also crafted pieces for notable clients such as members of the Saudi and Kuwaiti Royal families, as well as the Sultan of Brunei. Bruce spent sixteen rewarding years in London, first with Riogem and later with Robert Glenn in Hatton Garden. These experiences set a high standard for his future work.
Professional Journey
After his years in London, Bruce moved to Western Australia in 1993, joining award-winning Perth jeweller Linney. This was a pivotal period where he developed his personal style and a passion for pearls. Encouraged by Alan Linney, Bruce participated in state and national competitions, becoming a finalist for several Jewellery Design Awards, including the 1996 Jewellers Association of Australia (J.A.A.) Awards, where he received one of only two High Commendations that year.
Alongside his professional work, Bruce studied for a Diploma of Arts (Jewellery Design) at Fremantle T.A.F.E. College.
Return to New Zealand
Bruce returned to New Zealand after 23 years abroad to be closer to his elderly parents. He contracted with a high-end jeweller in Remuera, where he met and befriended hard stone carver Sam Wilkinson of Havelock North. Their friendship led to regular collaboration in Sam’s picturesque Hawkes Bay studio. Eventually, Bruce relocated permanently to Hawkes Bay and in November 2005, established UNIO Goldsmith in Havelock North.
UNIO Goldsmith & Community Engagement
UNIO Goldsmith and Gallery quickly earned a reputation in Hawkes Bay for creating exceptional, one-of-a-kind jewellery. Bruce’s loyal customers share his passion for design, style, and quality, and many return time and again. Over the years, he has created bespoke pieces for Prime Ministers, politicians, visiting celebrities, and many others. Collaboration with renowned designer David Trubridge resulted in a jewellery collection distributed worldwide. Bruce has also been actively involved in the local community through schools, charities, and arts sponsorship in Hawkes Bay. Something he continues to do in Whitianga.
